Boothbay Harbor, Vassalboro awarded $4.4M for water infrastructure upgrades

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investing $4.4 million to assist both the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District and the Vassalboro Sanitary District.

Boothbay Harbor will receive a $450,000 water and waste disposal direct loan and a $150,000 grant and Vassalboro will receive a $2,113,000 water and waste disposal direct loan and a $1,700,000 grant, according to a news release.

The Boothbay Harbor Sewer District will use this support for upgrades to its sewer distribution system. The Vassalboro sanitary district will make an interconnection with the town of Winslow to facilitate treatment at the Kennebec Sanitary Treatment District's Regional wastewater treatment facility.

“Water infrastructure helps to set a foundation for the health and safety of communities across Maine,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement. “Investments like these from USDA Rural Development play an important role in that effort, marshaling critical resources for Maine people.”

These Maine investments come through USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Programs, and are part of a nationwide announcement of $264 million in loans and $67 million in grants. These programs provide assistance and financing to communities with 10,000 or fewer residents to develop drinking water and waste disposal systems, according to a news release.
