Border crossing fees off the table

A U.S. Senate subcommittee has scuttled part of a bill that would study impacts of a fee for people entering the U.S. by land from Canada or Mexico.

The Associated Press reported that U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said that part of the Department of Homeland Security’s funding bill for fiscal year 2014 has been removed.

Collins had expressed opposition to the fee when it was proposed in April, saying it would disproportionately affect Maine’s border towns and would send the wrong message to both Mexico and Canada.

The fiscal bill for that department now goes to the larger Appropriations Committee for consideration today.
