Bowman Constructors has broken ground on Hometown Health Center's facility in Palmyra.
Harriman was the architect on the project, which is at 55 Fletcher Drive.
The new facility will prioritize holistic wellness, addressing medical needs but also promoting nutritional health and physical fitness.
The site itself will have a teaching kitchen, community garden and food bank.
Hometown Health Center, which has other sites in Newport and Dexter, says its aim is "to combat food insecurity prevalent in many Maine communities, empowering individuals and families to make healthier food choices. The new site will incorporate yoga, racquetball, basketball, physical therapy and weight training and will offer a walking track and gym equipment. It will also include daycare.
Robin Winslow, CEO of Hometown Health Center, said, “This new health and wellness center has been a longtime goal and we are thrilled that it has finally come to fruition. This community has a vast array of needs that could improve their quality of life but not a lot of resources.
"It is our intention that the new facility will fill the gap, ensure our community members get the care they need as well as other programmatic options to improve their health and overall well-being. We live in a wonderful, caring community. They deserve this.”
From groundbreaking to completion, they will work closely with HHC to ensure that the facility meets the highest standards of quality, functionality, and sustainability.
"Together, we are committed to constructing not just a building, but a cornerstone of community wellness that addresses the unique needs of the region," said Kevin Bowman, president of Newport-based Bowman Constructors.
Harriman is based in Portland and has offices in Auburn, as well as Portsmouth, N.H., and Boston.
