The University of Maine's "bridge in a backpack" has garnered the interest of a Russian firm building the site for the 2014 Winter Olympics in that country's city of Sochi.
Advance Infrastructure Technologies, the Orono company licensed to market UMaine's unique bridge product, last week signed a memorandum of understanding with Russian company Noviy Proekt to use the technology at the $1.5 billion Olympics site, according to the Bangor Daily News. AIT would provide design and engineering expertise, coordinate the manufacture of the bridge elements in Maine and export them to Russia for construction. Andrey Andreev, Noviy Proekt's strategic development director, told the paper that he and his colleagues would return to Maine in January to sign a contract.
UMaine's AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center developed the bridge in a backpack, a kit that uses flexible composite tubes that are filled on-site with concrete. Six of the bridges have been built in Maine, and others are planned across the country.
