Brunswick loses businesses to neighbor
Brunswick is losing two retail stores that are moving across the Androscoggin River to the Topsham Fair Mall, where they say more foot traffic from customers is expected.
The Forecaster reported that Auburn-based Lamey Wellehan Shoes and Waterville-based Day’s Jewelers are moving from the Cook’s Corner Plaza and Merrymeeting Plaza in Brunswick, respectively. Retailers have been leaving the area ever since the former Brunswick Naval Air Station closed in 2011.
Don Stockwell, operations manager of Lamey Wellehan, told the newspaper that the Topsham shopping center was offering more space and that a new lease agreement couldn’t be reached with the store’s current landlord.
Jeff Corey, the board chairman of Day’s, told The Forecaster that the Brunswick store was losing foot traffic over time as major retailers like Borders and Old Navy pulled out of the area. Based on company research, he said, the Topsham Fair Mall attracts far more customers.
One of the Brunswick plaza developers, WS Development, is reaching out to local groups like the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority and Southern Midcoast Chamber of Commerce to discuss how to attract new tenants.
