Budget problems cripple Good Will-Hinckley

Good Will-Hinckley Homes for Boys & Girls in Fairfield intends to lay off about 110 staff members and suspend its core residential programs Sept. 1.

Don Marden, chairman of the Good Will board, told the Morning Sentinel that both state and federal cuts to reimbursement rates for residential care programs with the recession have restricted the school's ability to provide scholarships and reduced its endowment and fundraising income. Directors must slash a $10 million budget to $2 million for the upcoming school year.

The nonprofit organization, founded in 1889, provides on-campus housing and classes at Averill High School for troubled youth ages 11 through 21. About 25 staff members will stay at Good Will-Hinckley, the paper reported, and several programs will remain open, including the Glenn Stratton Learning Center for special education students and the L.C. Bates Museum.
