Builder pitches $17.5M Portland waterfront hotel

Developer J.B. Brown & Sons is looking to build a 131-room waterfront hotel in Portland's Old Port, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The project, estimated to cost $17.5 million, is the third hotel proposal standing before city planners.

A 124-room Old Port hotel was proposed earlier this year by Cow Plaza Hotel LLC and another proposal stands to convert the former Press Herald building at 390 Congress St. into a 100-room boutique hotel and restaurant.

The latest proposal would place a Courtyard by Marriott hotel on what is now a 1-acre parking lot near the city's fish pier and would feature a 7,000-square-foot restaurant and 14 rental units.

In total, the proposals standing before the city amount to around $38 million to create 400 new hotel rooms, the Press Herald reported.

These proposals are set against a backdrop of moves over the past three years by the Hampton Inn and Residence Inn that added a collective 300 rooms in the city.
