Bull Hill wind farm comes online

Days after announcing plans for a 50- to 60-turbine wind farm near Bingham, Boston-based First Wind announced it has put a 19-turbine wind farm online in Hancock County in a 15-year fixed-price agreement with the utility NSTAR.

The Associated Press reported that the 34-megawatt project on the ridges of Bull Hill and Heifer Hill will generate enough power to serve around 18,000 homes.

Construction on the project began in June and was completed ahead of schedule, with Woolwich-based contractors Reed & Reed using a new technique of raising the turbines, according to the industry publication North American Windpower.

Reed & Reed President Jackson Parker told The Boston Globe that construction of wind farms now makes up about half of the firm's business. Company officials told Mainebiz in 2009 that it was preparing its work force for new jobs in the burgeoning wind power industry.

For the Bull Hill project, First Wind expects to make around $100,000 in aggregate tax payments to the county and $240,000 in other payments to Hancock County and the town of Eastbrook over the next 20 years.

The company is also seeking state approval for a 16-turbine wind farm to the north at a mountain near Carroll Plantation, outside of Lincoln.

Earlier this week, the company announced plans to develop land currently used for timber harvesting to build a wind farm with 50 to 60 wind turbines near the town of Bingham, according to the Morning Sentinel.
