Bureau warns of loan scam

A phony company offering loans over the phone and Internet is operating a scam, according to the state agency charged with protecting consumer credit.

Solicitors claiming to be from Wells-based North Lake Equity Group who have detailed personal financial information are offering loans to people who agree to make several payments in advance, warns the Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection. The bureau suspects the financial information may have come from unauthorized access to consumer credit reports.

Although the website the company was operating has been taken down, calls persist, and several people have been bilked out of hundreds of dollars, according to the release.
