Burnham wood pellet plant scrapped
A representative for San Diego-based International Wood Fuels is calling the company's plan to build a $20 million wood pellet plant in Waldo County dead.
The company in July 2009 said it would open a plant in Burnham adjacent to golf-tee maker Pride Manufacturing Co., producing 100,000 tons of wood pellets annually and creating 300 jobs. The plant would have used some of the waste wood from the tee manufacturer, and the two companies would have shared a log yard. But International Wood Fuels pushed back construction work from 2009 to 2011 in order to focus on another facility being built in Virginia.
But company representative Laura Sawall told the Republican Journal the project has been scrapped, in part because of a lack of state support and availability of rail transportation. The company has closed its Portland office.
