Business incubator breaks ground in Brunswick

A $1.5 million renovation project began on Thursday for TechPlace, a federally backed, 90,000-square-foot business incubator that will open in Brunswick this December.

The Bangor Daily News reported that four to five businesses have already expressed interest in moving into the Brunswick Landing facility. The renovation work is being supported by a $2 million federal grant from the competitive “Make it in America Challenge,” which was launched by President Barack Obama’s administration.

The former U.S. Navy building will aim to support a “community of creative innovators and bold entrepreneurs in a shared high-tech manufacturing workplace,” according to Steve Levesque, executive director of Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority.

Levesque said a collaboration between elected officials at the federal, state and local level helped move the project forward — something he said isn't all too common these days.
