Business power prices to rise

Electricity prices for businesses using the standard offer in Central Maine Power Co. and Bangor Hydro Electric's service areas will rise beginning Sept. 1.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission this week accepted bids for new standard offer prices for some commercial and industrial customers that are 2% to 9% higher than current prices, according to a press release. The prices affect CMP's medium-to-large commercial and industrial customers, and BHE's medium commercial and industrial customers. They only apply to customers that do not obtain their own electricity supply in the market. The PUC rejected bids for BHE large customers because they were too high, and directed BHE to develop a plan to provide standard offer service for that group.

The average prices are 7.2-7.3 cents per kilowatt-hour, and are in effect until March 2012.
