Lawmakers are expected to scrutinize tax breaks for businesses yet again as they grapple with filling a $221 million Medicaid budget gap.
Rep. Peggy Rotundo, the lead Democrat on the Legislature’s appropriations committee, told Capitol News Service that she expects the entire budget will come under review, not just health and human services spending. Earlier this month, the Lewiston lawmaker was instrumental in seeing that a list was compiled of all available state business tax breaks.
Several lawmakers told the news service previous studies of the impact of business tax breaks have been inconclusive, although Chris Hall, vice president of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce, noted a recent ranking by Ernst and Young credited Maine with having the best business-tax-investment climate in the country.
The Legislature reconvenes Jan. 3 to deal with the Medicaid shortfall, and at least two other bills – one to implement $25 million in cuts identified by a budget task force and another to address non-Medicaid budget problems.
