Businesses rally against retail worker bill

Some businesses and trade groups are pushing back against legislation that’s being called a “retail workers’ bill of rights.”

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported that the bill, sponsored by state Rep. Janice Cooper, D-Yarmouth. It would require, among other things, part-time workers to have the same hourly pay and promotion opportunities as full-time workers who have the same job.

Peter Gore, vice president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, opposed the bill, saying it would increase business costs and workplace friction, along with inhibiting job growth. Another group, the Theater Owners Association, said advance scheduling would be impossible because movies are often booked the week of opening day.
