Calais hospital cuts 23 positions

Calais Regional Hospital is cutting a total of 23 positions and freezing raises and matching pension contributions to offset a $1 million operating loss. Thirteen people will be laid off, and another 10 vacant positions will not be filled.

Following the reductions, the 25-bed hospital has 224 full-time-equivalent employees, according to the Bangor Daily News. Affected employees were notified. The hospital was operating in the red as of the end of May, prompting the staffing and compensation changes. Hospital officials cited fewer patients, a decrease in reimbursement for services and the recent closure of the city's only licensed nursing home as the reason for its financial troubles. All employees, including executives, will be affected by the salary and pension changes.

Atlantic Rehabilitation and Nursing Center closed June 21, leaving 92 jobless.
