Calais LNG gets Dec. 1 deadline

The state has given Calais LNG until Dec. 1 to secure financial backers and file its completed application, granting the developer's third request for an extension.

The company, which is proposing a $1 billion liquefied natural gas terminal in Calais, requested the extension Monday in order to solidify agreements with two potential investors. Bureau of Environmental Protection board chair Susan Lessard approved the extension Thursday following a daylong meeting held Wednesday between BEP members and Calais LNG representatives, according to the Bangor Daily News. "In light of the significance of this project in terms of scope, complexity and cost, as well as the time spent and expenses incurred by the parties and the department thus far in the processing of the pending application, it is reasonable to allow the applicant the requested time to complete refinancing negotiations," she wrote in a letter to Calais LNG's attorney, David Van Slyke.

Lessard also confirmed that interested parties would have adequate time to review the application before a public hearing is scheduled, according to the paper.
