Camden inns clash over proposed rule change

If three Camden inns were able to serve dinner to guests after previously not being able to, would it create unfair competition for other inns?

The Camden Herald reported that Camden voters will have to answer that question for a local referendum on this year's Nov. 4 ballot. The proposal seeks to lift a ban on serving dinner for three inns that are currently located within the town's Traditional Village Zone, and nine other inns have come out in opposition.

The nine opposing inns, all members of the Camden Bed and Breakfast Association, say the change in the town's zoning rules would create unfair competition.

Claudio Latanza of Maine Stay Inn told The Camden Herald that by allowing the three inns to serve dinner, it will discourage guests from patronizing any of Camden's restaurants. He said it will also force all other inns to serve dinner.

Kristi Bifulco, the owner of the Windward House who proposed the rule change, has previously said that allowing hers and other inns to serve dinner is a matter of fairness and that it would encourage more outside visitors.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed Claudio Latanza as saying he might sell his inn if the proposal is approved.
