Camden voters have rejected a proposal that would have allowed three inns within the town's Traditional Village Zone to serve dinner to overnight guests.
The Camden Herald reported that the referendum measure was defeated on Tuesday with 1,259 voting “yes” and 1,503 voting “no.”
The proposal was sought by Kristi Bifulco, owner of the Windward House. The inn and two others are located within a zone that doesn't allow them to serve dinner to overnight guests. Some other inns, like the ones located within the town's commercial zone, are allowed to serve dinner.
Bifulco has said that allowing the three inns to serve dinner is a matter of fairness and that it would encourage more outside visitors. But nine opposing inns, all members of the Camden Bed and Breakfast Association, have said that the change in the town's zoning rules would have created unfair competition.
