Canadian utility tentatively eyes new connection to Maine

Officials with the Newfoundland-based Nalcor Energy said the company could construct a link from Nova Scotia to Maine in order to bring more of its electricity to more populous New England markets.

The Associated Press reported the company has no public proposals in the works, but identified the Maine connection as one possibility to bring power from hydroelectric and wind-power projects in eastern Canada to customers in New England and New York.

Greg Jones, the general manager of energy marketing for the company, told the AP Friday that getting to Maine alone won’t bring the company to build an undersea connection from Nova Scotia to eastern Maine. To advance that possibility, Jones said discussions are under way to add a new transmission line across Maine and that his company has engaged “major players in the New England states” to discuss the proposal.

Currently, Nalcor plans to build undersea power lines to cross from the mainland of Labrador to Newfoundland and then across the 100 miles from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia.

The AP reported the announcement reflects an effort from Canadian energy companies to deliver power from eastern Canada into U.S. markets.
