Officials from Bumble Bee Foods are refuting claims by a Massachusetts lobster company that the sale of the former Stinson Seafood cannery is complete.
Bumble Bee Foods LLC spokeswoman Erika Ulring told the Bangor Daily News that, contrary to Live Lobster Co. President Antonio Bussone's statement, the sale of the shuttered cannery in Gouldsboro is not yet finalized. "They anticipate the closing will happen soon," she told the paper. Bussone on Feb. 18 released a statement saying his company had completed its purchase of the cannery following months of delay. Reached last week, Bussone did not comment on Bumble Bee Foods' statement, but said he is unaware of any issues that would delay completing the sale and that his company is moving forward. He told the paper he is lining up contractors to renovate the facility and has purchased equipment.
Chelsea-based Live Lobster Co. has been negotiating the purchase of the cannery, which closed last April, since the summer. The company plans to buy and sell lobster and bait, and hopes to eventually process lobster.
