Cannery workers eligible for aid

Workers at a recently shuttered cannery in Prospect Harbor are now eligible for federal aid, even as the state negotiates a deal with a buyer.

The U.S. Department of Labor has approved Trade Adjustment Assistance for about 130 workers affected by Friday's closure of the Bumble Bee Foods sardine cannery, according to the Associated Press. Workers will have access to job retraining and placement services. A dollar amount of available aid was not specified.

State officials Friday said they were close to finding a buyer for the former Stinson Seafood cannery, with hopes to announce a deal next month. Bumble Bee announced the closure in February.
