Christina Kane-Gibson, recently hired as Caribou’s new marketing and events coordinator, is planning new tourist draws, including collaborations with other cities in Aroostook County.
The Aroostook Republican reported Kane-Gibson’s ideas include an enhanced Winter Carnival, Santa Claus Crawl shopping event, Caribou Crafts and Cocktails event and “Classic Hollywood” movies in the park, adding to a proven repertoire of events such as Thursdays on Sweden, a summer-long arts, music and vendor festival.
“If we could really fill those storefronts, get more people down there, and get it hoppin’, it would strengthen surrounding commercial districts and that would balloon out,” she told the paper.
Partnerships with other cities on tourism events would be good for the county in general, she told the paper.
“Tourism in Aroostook County is really the goal,” Kane-Gibson said. “Be it Caribou, Presque Isle, or Fort Fairfield, I want everyone to succeed. It could lead to businesses wanting to be up here, which could lead to jobs, and ultimately more people moving up here.”
Aroostook County Tourism indicated similar goals, with the update and relaunch for 2017 of its visitors guide, last redesigned in 2009.
New businesses, jobs and people is also the goal of the Aroostook Partnership for Progress, which is seeking to attract new employers, retaining existing employers, connect with educators to link students with emerging jobs and show folks who have departed, no matter their age, they can get both good jobs and a great quality of life at home.
