Casco Bay Lines in Portland is receiving a $2.5 million federal grant in as part of a two-phase project to expand and improve its ferry terminal.
The award came from the Federal Transit Administration’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine.
The funds will be used for phase two of the terminal improvement project, which will focus on improving access for vessels, along with overall safety and security.
Phase one of the project, which began last September, has involved expanding the terminal’s waiting area and installing windows to improve passengers’ view of incoming ferries.
Hank Berg, the ferry line’s general manager, told Mainebiz in a 2010 feature story that he moved to Peaks Island to avoid a long commute, address his lack of experience in marine transportation and understand the service’s importance to many passengers.
"I'm realizing just how dependent islanders are on the ferry," he said in the April 2010 story. "We have to be on time. People from the islands have places to be, appointments and flights. Bad news travels fast, so if we're running late, it's bad for customer service."
