Casella pursues landfill-to-UMaine gas pipeline
A subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems Inc. has filed a petition with state regulators for an $11 million-$13.5 million gas pipeline from Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town to the University of Maine in Orono. The pipeline would send methane gas from the landfill to UMaine to run boilers and heat campus buildings.
EcoGas LLC is seeking preliminary approval to build and operate the seven-mile pipeline from the Maine Public Utilities Commission, according to the Bangor Daily News. UMaine and Casella talked about the plan for three years before reaching an agreement in November. The methane gas from the state-owned, Casella-operated landfill is expected to save UMaine about $15 million over 20 years and cut its carbon emissions by 40%. Old Town would also benefit, receiving 5% of Casella’s gas sales revenue and permission to dump waste from its treatment plant, according to the paper. The PUC will meet to discuss the petition April 25.
In a bill stalled before the Senate, Casella sought ownership of the landfill as part of its deal with Biddeford officials to sell its trash incinerator and send that waste to Old Town.
