A petition seeking approval to build a casino on land occupied by Bates Mill No. 5 in Lewiston is expected to tie up the property for two years.
Great Falls Casino LLC, an investment group behind the project, is seeking signatures to put a purchase and sale agreement on the June citywide ballot, according to the Sun Journal. If voters approve the measure, Great Falls Casino would pay the city 125% of the land's appraised value as of Jan. 1, 2010. The eight-acre parcel sits at the downtown intersection of Canal and Main streets.
With local approval, the backers would then begin collecting signatures for a statewide ballot question in November 2011. According to the language of the Lewiston petition, the casino will give 8.6% of all revenues to local government, with Lewiston getting 2.5%; Auburn and Androscoggin County each getting 1%; the towns of Sabattus, Lisbon and Greene sharing a half-percent; and efforts to clean Maine rivers 3%. Additional revenues would be set aside for a downtown Lewiston renovation fund and to purchase alternative energy for the city, according to the paper.
