Anti-casino group Oxford Hills No on One is seeking a recount of the Nov. 2 ballot votes that approved a four-season resort and casino in Oxford County.
The group filed petitions with 153 signatures with the Secretary of State's office yesterday before the 5 p.m. deadline to request a recount, according to The Associated Press and a press release from the Secretary of State's office. The measure won by a margin of 5,300 votes, and spokesman Scott Vlaun told The AP "there's plenty of room for error" and the group wanted "to make sure we did in fact lose it at the polls." Vlaun said his group is working with CasinosNo! on the recount effort. CasinosNo! spokesman Dennis Bailey said last week following the vote that the group could also legally challenge a provision in the measure that prohibits another casino from being built within 100 miles.
At least 100 signatures will have to be verified for the recount to proceed, and the process could take as long as four weeks, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap told the news service. That recount will not begin until after the six recounts requested for public office seats are finished, according to the release.
