The state's ethics commission will fine the backers of a casino effort in Oxford County $1,000 for failing to report a $50,000 payment to the campaign's spokesman, Peter Martin.
The Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices agreed on the fine after ruling last month that Black Bear Entertainment was remiss for not disclosing the payment to Martin, according to the Kennebec Journal. The commission could have fined the PAC as much as $10,000, according to the paper. Dan Walker, an attorney for the political action committee, said the omission was a clerical mistake. The commission also rejected Walker's request that it reconsider its decision that Martin failed to register with the state as a lobbyist on time, for which Martin was fined $200.
Both omissions were brought to light by Dennis Bailey of CasinosNo!, who filed complaints with the ethics commission in April. Voters in November will decide whether to allow the proposed four-season casino resort in Oxford.
