Cellardoor Winery — which has a vineyard, winery and tasting room in Lincolnville and a tasting room at Thompson’s Point in Portland — won 10 gold medals, including two “best of class” and three “double gold” awards at the 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest wine competition in North America.

This year’s competition attracted over 6,800 entries that were judged over three days by 65 professional judges.

Here’s the breakdown of Cellardoor’s winning entries:

  • Best of Class: 2017 Riesling (unreleased); 2017 Chenin Blanc (unreleased).
  • Double Gold: 2015 Pinot Noir (unreleased); 2015 Syrah (unreleased); 2017 The Buoy.
  • Gold: 2015 Aurora; 2015 Chardonnay; 2016 Perfect Stranger; 2014 Ned Said Red; 2017 Theron (unreleased).

Double Gold winner The Buoy, an American blend of Semillon, Riesling and Chenin Blanc was released in partnership with Bangor Savings Bank’s Buoy Local to benefit Midcoast Habitat for Humanity. San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Judge Mike Dunn said, "Another confirmation that fine wine is being produced in every corner of the country."

Cellardoor Winery  owner Bettina Doulton said of the strong showing in the competition: “Our winemaker, Aaron Peet, and his team are proving that great winemaking doesn’t only happen close to where the grapes grow. I’m proud that we’re using Washington, California, and New York grapes to make American, award-winning, food-friendly wine in Maine.”
