Changes OK'ed for Port of Eastport

The Army Corps of Engineers has approved a modified permit for improvements at the Port of Eastport, helping to save the project half a million dollars in construction costs.

The port is undergoing an $8 million expansion to add a cargo conveyor system, and needed to amend its federal permits to add a new warehouse and container yard, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection approved the changes, but delays by the Army Corps of Engineers could have forced the port to spend another $500,000 to bring the construction company back onsite. Last week, U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe appealed to the Army Corps to fast-track its approval, and the group approved the permits 48 hours later, according to the paper.

The Army Corps's approval was needed because the amendments affected wetlands.
