New Hampshire transportation officials have selected a Chicago company to lead construction of a new Memorial Bridge.
Archer Western Contractors bid $81.4 million to build a new bridge between Maine and New Hampshire to replace the deteriorated bridge, according to Seacoast Online. Although the company was the highest bidder, it promised to finish the project by July 2013, a full year ahead of schedule. New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch and the state's executive council must still approve the bid, which they are expected to do next month. Maine officials must also sign off on the selection. Archer Western was chosen over Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp., which bid $78.8 million with a November 2013 completion date, and Littleton, Mass.-based Middlesex Corp., which bid $78.6 million with the same deadline.
Transportation officials in both states closed the Memorial Bridge in July, one year earlier than anticipated and a full year before construction is expected to start on the new bridge. The project has received $20 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
