Child care workers choose to form union

Nearly 800 Maine child care workers voted yesterday in favor of forming a union.

The workers, most of whom run home-based child care businesses, voted 790-125 to unionize with the Maine State Employees Association, part of the Service Employees International Union. The union, which would represent about 2,200 licensed providers statewide, would allow workers to bargain for affordable heath and liability insurance, and play a bigger role when the state makes regulations for child care businesses, according to a press release.

The workers plan to lobby for state approval of the union during the upcoming legislative session.
