Pittsfield-based construction firm Cianbro Corp. announced Friday it has acquired Starcon International Inc., an Illinois petrochemical contractor with which the Maine firm has partnered since last December.
Cianbro acquired all of Starcon's stock for an undisclosed price, adding 1,500 employees and offices in Texas, California and Louisiana to Cianbro's holdings, according to the Kennebec Journal. Cianbro formed an alliance with Starcon, a mechanical contractor for oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nearly a year ago aimed at opening new markets for Cianbro and giving its employees work during the slow winter months. The acquisition will make Starcon a wholly owned subsidiary of Cianbro and will allow Cianbro to further expand into the $12 billion refining and petrochemical service business, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.
Cianbro in late 2008 opened its Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer, which manufactured 51 modules for a Texas oil refinery, the last of which was shipped in June. Chairman Peter Vigue told the paper the acquisition will create more work for the company's facilities in Maine.
