Cianbro CEO pursues east west highway

Peter Vigue, president and CEO of Cianbro Corp., may make the long-debated east west Maine highway a reality.

On Tuesday, Vigue unveiled a proposal for a privately funded toll highway from Calais to Coburn Gore at a breakfast organized by the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce and the Action Committee of 50, a Bangor business group, the Bangor Daily News reported. Vigue said the highway would cost about a billion dollars to build and he would need three privately held roads to complete the route, according to Portland television station WCSH6.

Vigue said the highway would reduce travel time, costs and fuel emissions for heavy American and Canadian trucks traveling in northern Maine, according to the Daily News. He said a New York bank had given the project a "thumbs up."
