Claims against Nova Star top $1.6 million

The claims of outstanding debts owed by Nova Star Cruises has risen to more than $1.6 million.
The city of Portland and Portland Development Corp. both filed notices Friday that two entities planned to get involved in the case, the Portland Press Herald reported.
On Oct. 30, U.S. Marshals seized the ferry anchored in Casco Bay after the Portland Pilots filed a complaint in U.S. District Court, claiming it was owed more than $195,000 for unpaid pilot services.
The day before, Nova Scotia announced it had dropped Nova Star Cruises as the operator of the Portland-to-Yarmouth, Nova Scotia ferry and was negotiating with the former operator of the Cat ferry instead.
Charles Remmel, a lawyer for the Portland Development Corp., told the Press Herald that the city’s economic development agency loaned Nova Star Cruises more than $151,000 in early 2014 to assist the ferry in making modifications to operate in Portland.
Remmel told the paper that the ferry operator also owes the city more than $85,000 for use of city facilities when in Portland.
A Nova Star Cruises spokesman has said the company intends to pay all outstanding bills.
