Town officials in Clifton have approved a $25 million wind farm on Pisgah Mountain, and construction could begin this year.
Town planners on Wednesday signed off on the five-turbine wind farm proposed by developer Paul Fuller of Bangor, who owns 270 acres on the mountain in Penobscot County, according to the Bangor Daily News. He told the paper he and his partners in Pisgah Mountain LLC plan to install cement footings, work on road improvements and possibly install electricity at the project site this year, with the wind turbines being installed next year. The turbines are expected to generate electricity for up to 4,000 homes.
Last November, town residents voted 258-183 against levying stricter regulations on wind facilities, allowing the project to move forward and receive preliminary approval in June. The project is not without opposition. Resident Peter Beckford told the paper the developers' "application is lame" and that he plans to appeal the town's final approval.
