CMP brings back former CEO in effort to restore public confidence

Former Central Maine Power Co. CEO David T. Flanagan has returned to the electric utility as executive chairman and has a single mission, according to a news release Wednesday: “Turn CMP around.”

Flanagan began his new role Tuesday and CMP was scheduled to hold a news conference Wednesday morning on his appointment.

In the release, CMP said Flanagan “will focus on restoring quality customer service to its Maine customers.” The company has come under public fire in recent years, partly because of weather-related outages and complaints about its billing practices.

Earlier this month, after conducting an investigation of the complaints, the Maine Public Utilities Commission penalized CMP with a $10 million earnings cut and ruled that the company “must meet higher standards of performance in both customer service and reliability.”

In November, CMP scored last among among utilities nationwide in a satisfaction survey of business customers. CMP recently launched an advertising campaign intended to improve its public image.

Flanagan served as CEO from 1994-2000, and was well-known for his leadership while CMP restored power during the Ice Storm of 1998.

In the release, he said, "While the company faces challenging times, I will work with the dedicated employees of CMP to return to providing high quality, transparent, and reliable service for our customers; and to earn back the trust of Maine people.”

Tony Marone, the CEO of parent company AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), commented: “David Flanagan is skilled in turning organizations around. There is no one better suited, by skills, knowledge and temperament, to restore the quality of services and provide leadership in a new century for this historic Maine company."

Flanagan reports directly to Marone. Doug Herling, the president and CEO of CMP, reports to Flanagan.

CMP, the state's largest electricity provider, has more than 620,000 customers in central and southern Maine.

It may be too late. I respect David Flanagan but perhaps he could better usher in a new publicly owned company.
