CMP technicians vote to join union

Six workers who install and maintain fiber optic cable and microwave networks for Central Maine Power Co. have voted to join a union that includes 550 other CMP employees.

The company's fiber microwave technicians will join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1837 union, according to union organizer Matt Beck.

Those workers handle the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the company's fiber optic cable network that carries voice and data communications.

The company now has 556 of its 920 employees in that union. CMP spokesman John Carroll told Mainebiz in an email that the company is prepared to begin negotiations with those workers as they assimilate into the larger bargaining unit.

The union said in a press release that it also brought in system operators at Bangor Hydro and Electric System and electric system operators at Unitil.

The union says customer service representatives at CMP's Augusta offices have submitted union authorization cards and will vote on joining June 5. Beck said a favorable vote would add around 45 more workers to the union.
