A Massachusetts company developing an airborne wind turbine plans to begin testing the technology at the Loring Commerce Centre later this fall.
Altaeros Energies will lease part of Loring's arch hangar for several months to test a prototype of its helium-filled turbine, which is tethered to the ground with cables and able to ascend up to 500 feet, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company, led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University alumni, is developing the turbine to capture the stronger, more consistent winds of higher altitudes. Altaeros will share the hangar with Science Applications International Corp. Carl Flora, CEO of the Loring Development Authority, told the paper the company could become a long-term partner for the center and return for additional testing. Altaeros also received a $11,800 seed grant from the Maine Technology Institute to help fund the testing, according to an MTI press release sent today.
The center on the former air force base houses more than 20 employers, including the Loring Jobs Corps and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
