COA president to retire next year

College of the Atlantic President David Hales announced he will retire at the end of the 2010-2011 academic year.

Hales, 67, has served as president of the Bar Harbor college since June 2006, during which time COA has earned national attention for its sustainability practices, including becoming the first carbon-neutral higher education institution in 2007, according to the Ellsworth American. Since 2006, the school's enrollment has increased from 280 to 330 students. In announcing his resignation, Hales said he and the trustees agreed "it was the right time to begin a leadership transition" and that the move would allow him to focus on "other issues about which I care deeply," although he did not specify what those issues are.

COA will begin planning a search for a new president to succeed Hales at the beginning of the 2011-2012 academic year, according to the paper.
