Coastal orgs. subjects of alleged theft
A Hancock County woman has been summonsed for allegedly embezzling more than $15,000 from an Ellsworth nonprofit, while a Nobleboro man has been indicted on charges of stealing more than $10,000 from his employer.
Sandra Linnell of Mariaville allegedly misused company credit cards at Yesterday's Children Inc., a nonprofit that works with people with developmental disabilities, according to the Bangor Daily News. Linnell worked at the nonprofit for more than two years, and is accused of using credit cards to make personal purchases. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. Yesterday's Children operates three residential facilities and two learning centers, and serves people in Hancock, Washington, Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
In an unrelated incident, Walter Guptill was indicted last week for theft by unauthorized taking for allegedly using credit card transactions to steal from P.J. Schwalbenberg & Associates and associated business Cushing Diesel Services LLC, the Herald Gazette reported. Guptill, who worked as a bookkeeper for the company, allegedly stole from the company from October 2005 to October 2009. An initial report filed with the sheriff's department in 2009 said that approximately $300,000 was stolen from P.J. Schwalbenberg & Associates.
