Coffee By Design was recently announced as one of 10 finalists in the running to win Green America's first-ever People and Planet award.
The Portland-based coffee roaster, which also operates four coffee shop locations around Portland and one at L.L. Bean in Freeport, beat out 250 small, sustainable businesses from across the country to reach the final cut, according to a press release.
The People & Planet Awards gives $5,000 prizes to the three businesses that best exemplify innovative, green business practices. If CBD wins, it will use the money to replace its existing particleboard countertops with recycled glass and seashell countertops from Maine-based manufacturer Beachstone Sustainable Surfaces.
Coffee by Design installed a solar power array on the roof of its Washington Avenue coffee house and roastery earlier this summer with the help of Maine-based Revision Solar. The 44 panels are expected to produce about half of the power used in the facility, offsetting roughly 18,000 pounds of C02 emissions from conventional electricity sources.
Voting is open to the public until Labor Day at greenamerica.org.
