Colby College has appointed the co-founder of a leading technology company as the director of the Halloran Lab for Entrepreneurship, effective March 31.
Jeremy Barron co-founded speech technology and video-accessibility company 3Play Media in 2007, for which he and his team wrote the business plan and secured more than $1 million in capital. He also helped design and develop 3Play Media's captioning, transcription, audio-description, and subtitling services.
Barron has also worked in leadership positions in the nonprofit sector as a program director for several foundation-based outreach programs and as a senior financial analyst for Green Manning & Bunch.
He was named entrepreneur-in-residence of the Waterville startup Dirigo Labs and received an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management after majoring in anthropology and biology at Colby.
The Halloran Lab for Entrepreneurship provides opportunities and experiences for understanding and applying the principles of entrepreneurship. The lab was a gift from trustee emeritus Todd Halloran, who spent most of his career investing in and working with business leaders and entrepreneurs. The lab will provide education and training programs, funding for students to start commercial and social enterprises and initiatives; mentorships; and innovative, collaborative and creative learning environments on campus and downtown Waterville. The lab will also help develop collaboration between alumni, faculty, staff, members of the community, along with partnerships with companies, organizations, and institutions.
"I am eager to engage with [Halloran] and all the staff, faculty, and students at Colby who are or hope to be connected to this endeavor and to think about ways to make this the best entrepreneurship lab in all liberal arts education," said Barron. "Colby is ahead of the curve and out there innovating, as it has always been."
"From his experience launching and scaling a successful company to his passion for mentoring other founders, Jeremy Barron has the ideal background and vision to make the Halloran Lab an integral part of the Colby experience," said Colby President David A. Greene. "His enthusiasm for the work is contagious, and he will inspire our students and others to probe challenges in pursuit of solutions, to take risks, and to gauge when to keep going and when to change course. I'm delighted that he is returning to Colby in this important role."
