Collins: Exempt Maine from truck weight limits

Sen. Susan Collins is asking that federal weight limits on trucks be waived in Maine for trucks traveling on much of I-95.

Collins is asking senators to approve a one-year pilot project that would exempt Maine's highways from the 80,000-pound federal truck limit, according to the Associated Press. Currently, trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds are allowed to travel on I-95 from the New Hampshire border to Augusta, but the limit then drops to 80,000 pounds, forcing trucks onto secondary roads. Collins wants to allow trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds on all Maine's interstate highways.

Collins says sending heavy trucks back onto the highways would prevent wear and tear on Maine's secondary roads.
