Collins snags powerful seat

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins yesterday was named to the Senate Committee on Appropriations, one of the oldest and most powerful legislative committees.

The committee votes on spending in nearly every bill that makes its way through the Senate. Collins is the first Maine senator to serve on the appropriations committee since Margaret Chase Smith in 1972. Collins also holds seats on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, where she is the ranking member.

For the history buffs: The very first chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, when it was first organized in 1867, was a Republican Senator from Maine, Lot Morrill.
