Comm. colleges freeze tuition

The Maine Community College System has announced it will freeze tuition for the coming academic year as it seeks to further bring costs in line with the national average.

The state's seven community colleges will freeze tuition at $84 per credit hour, making annual tuition for a full-time student taking 30 credit hours over two semesters $2,520. The 2010-2011 tuition freeze was made possible by recent efforts by Gov. John Baldacci and the Legislature to restore $1.7 million in funding that had been targeted for cuts, and cost efficiencies implemented at each of the seven colleges, President John Fitzsimmons said in a press release.

The move, which follows freezes in seven of the last 12 years, is expected to make annual MCCS tuition and fees the lowest in New England, at $3,283. But the costs remain above the national average of $2,544.

More than 16,300 students are currently enrolled in the system.
