Commission urged to spur northern development

Maine and other Northeast officials are urging the Obama administration to use $30 million in federal stimulus funds to jumpstart a committee that would spur economic development in northern parts of the states.

Gov. John Baldacci and Maine's congressional delegation, along with the governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, are pushing to implement legislation to create the Northern Border Regional Commission, according to Capitol News Service. The legislation, originally sponsored by Rep. Mike Michaud, would create a committee with representatives from the four states to launch economic development initiatives in the North Woods area. The group wrote a series of letters asking the Obama administration to use money from the recovery act to fund the commission's creation. The legislation in the House also includes a request for $3 million in funding.

In order for funding to be released to the commission, the president must name a chair first, according to the news service.
