The Legislature’s appropriations committee gave unanimous approval to a nearly $150 million borrowing package, sending its recommendation to the full Legislature next week. If approved, the bond measure, which supports mostly transportation and education spending, would be placed on the ballot for voter approval in November.
The Portland Press Herald reported a bond package of five separate bills cleared the committee Thursday, paving its way for a vote during a special session next week. Earlier this summer, Gov. Paul LePage called on lawmakers to reconvene to put his $100 million transportation bond proposal out to the voters in September. In exchange, LePage said he would support up to $150 million in borrowing as a compromise offer to Democratic leaders.
The bill includes around $44 million for road improvements, around $27 million for rehabilitating bridges and about $9 million in infrastructure projects at the International Marine Terminal in Portland, where Eimskip relocated its U.S. headquarters this year.
The compromise bond package also includes $35.5 million for higher education, most of which will be shared between the University of Maine and the Maine Community College System, and another $14 million to improve Maine’s armories.
