Committee tables new lobster marketing proposal

A legislative committee has tabled a proposal to raise more funds for marketing Maine lobster, saying the plan needs clarification.

The Portland Press Herald reported the Legislature's Marine Resources Committee unanimously voted to table LD 486, which would set up new fees on lobster licenses to finance a new marketing fund to help increase profitability of the state's top fishery.

In voting to table the bill, legislators were uncertain about how lobstermen, dealers, processors and transporters might share the costs of the proposed marketing fund and, on the other end, how they might share the benefits of that spending.

Overall, the proposal sought to gradually increase the budget of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council from its annual $375,000 a year to $3 million in three years.
