Community colleges see 4% student growth

Enrollment in the Maine Community College System grew 4.3% over the year, adding 769 students, officials announced yesterday.

Schools with the largest growth this fall are Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, which saw a 6.5% rise; Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, up 5.8%; and Southern Maine Community College in South Portland and Brunswick, where enrollment grew 5.3%, according to the Kennebec Journal. However, system President John Fitzsimmons said the seven colleges are reaching capacity in many programs and must turn away qualified applicants.

Since the technical colleges became community colleges eight years ago, the system's enrollment has increased 83%, from 10,127 students in 2003 to 18,548 students today, according to the paper.
