Community colleges waive tuition

The Maine Community College System has unveiled a new program that would waive tuition for full-time students if their parents lose their jobs.

President John Fitzsimmons announced the plan to the Legislature yesterday. The program would start this fall and would allow students who are listed as dependents on their parents' tax returns to attend one of the system's schools without paying $2,500 a year in tuition, according to the Associated Press. Fitzsimmons did not say how many students would benefit from the program. Helen Pelletier, a system spokeswoman, told the AP the cost for the program is estimated to be $250,000 over two years and would not require new legislative budget action.

Fitzsimmons also asked lawmakers to approve $5.3 million in state investment annually to enroll 1,000 Maine workers in community college programs. The system is working to meet a potential $3.7 million deficit in the coming school year and recently increased tuition by 2.4%.
